The military junta president Ibrahim Traoré, who took power after a coup d’état two years ago, has managed to make his candidate, major colonel Oumarou Sawadogo, the only candidate two weeks before the presidential election at Burkinabè Football Federation (FBF).

After the recent events that have shaken football in Burkina Faso, many people involved in the sport no longer dare to express themselves, at least not publicly.
“The government has taken over our sport, that’s all” confides one of them.
“What can we do? It is what it is…”

An emerging force in continental football for the last fifteen years with continuous participation in the Africa Cup of Nations – except in 2019 – Burkina Faso is facing significant governance crises internally. After the election of Lazare Banssé in August 2020, the FBF has experienced numerous upheavals, marked by an ongoing conflict between Banssé and his predecessor, colonel Sita Sangaré.

With rifts and complaints, the relationship deteriorated when Sangaré received the support of several “dissident clubs” that demanded Banssé’s resignation.
